Growth and Black Water
A Silver Arrow/StarBaby Collaboration
During February 2017, I had the opportunity to have an artist residency at the Modular Project Space in Harrisonburg, Virginia. At this time I had been live painting for two years, channeling energy from the music and the experience and projecting them onto canvas. I wanted to see what would happen if I isolated that energy to just the music. I invited local musician, StarBaby, to collaborate with me. I had a 12ft x 9ft canvas drop cloth and I started painting when he started writing, and together we created this piece. At times our energies would flow together for 20 minutes, most times it was several hours, and our longest session was 18 hours. We made this time lapse to capture the entire process and never worked on it apart from each other.
At that time, the Lakota Sioux and ten thousand others fought the Dakota Access Pipeline, which was threatening their livelihoods and drinking water. On the home front, we were (and still are) fighting the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the Mountain Valley Pipeline. With those weighing heavy on our minds, we wanted to create something loving and showing the beauty of the world. After having brought it to a state of beauty, I had this realization and said aloud "it has to happen." StarBaby immediately knew what I meant, and everything changed.
